Reader Remarks on:

Are Proton-Pump Inhibitors Beneficial for Patients with Poorly Controlled Asthma?

PPI Rx, asthma

Michael C. Brown, 22 Apr 2009 6:24 PM EST

Competing interests: None declared

To my knowledge, PPI's do not reduce reflux/aspiration. Why would one expect them to alleviate asthma symptoms? I would guess that gastric secretions are not much less noxious to the repiratory tract whether at a pH of 5 or a pH of 7.

What is the effect of reflux reduction on asthma? And how would one study this? Michael Brown, MD
