Statins

I am not surprised, considering the mechanism of action. Why should we not give statins to everyone over a certain age, though?

Number Needed to treat!

Ajay Kumar Khandal, 17 Jul 2009 12:32 PM EST

Competing interests: None declared

When we talk about statistics, it need to address, what is called as a number needed to treat, and more so when a thing is considered for "Primary Prevention", >100 Patients for 4yrs to prevent 1 CV event, should not be regarded as evidence. What else do you expect from "Pharma oriented study", They happily call it as a market what is called as patient by doctors!

statins

Doug A Kaufmann, 17 Jul 2009 5:12 PM EST

Competing interests: None declared

A.V. Costantini, MD with WHO stated that prior to being used for hyperlipidemia, statin drugs were antifungal drugs. If this is accurate, this is a clear indication of the etiology of elevated serum lipids. Given the recent data regarding the increase risk of breast cancer when exposed to mycotoxins (both alcohol and antibiotics) and Mayo's work on the fungal etiology of chronic sinusitis, perhaps medical education should rely more heavily on Mycology

Statins and Aspirin - all about baseline risk

Andrew D. Calvin, Mayo Clinic, 20 Jul 2009 11:32 PM EST

Competing interests: None declared

Just like the debate about aspirin, we apparently need to consider baseline risk to put the sometimes impressive-sounding relative risk reduction into perspective and estimate the absolute risk reduction.

Statins

Dr. Abdul J. Wahab, M.D., 1 Jan 2010 7:13 PM EST

Competing interests: None declared

I have had very severe adverse effects from using Statins. Immediately after its use. I experienced coldness to my right thigh and ham string muscles with numbness while on Statins. I discontinued same for 3 months and challenged it again with the same adverse effects. It took >4 years for most of the above effects to disappear, however, I would experience the same symptoms periodically.
